For students outside the United States

F-1 student visa: overseas route

Admission comes first. The visa application is a separate government process handled through the appropriate U.S. embassy or consulate.

1

Gain admission

Apply to and receive acceptance from a U.S. school authorized to enroll international students.

2

Receive Form I-20

After the school enters the required information in SEVIS, it issues the Form I-20 for the student.

3

Pay the SEVIS fee

Follow the official I-901 SEVIS fee instructions and keep the payment record.

4

Complete the visa application

Follow the U.S. Department of State instructions, including the DS-160 and the process for the embassy or consulate where you will apply.

5

Attend the visa interview

A consular officer determines whether the applicant qualifies for the student visa and may request additional evidence.

6

Prepare for entry

A visa allows travel to a U.S. port of entry; CBP makes the admission decision. New students generally cannot enter more than 30 days before the program start date.

Interview preparation

Be ready to explain your study plan.

The State Department notes that additional documents may be requested regarding academic preparation, intent to depart after study, and how educational, living and travel costs will be paid.

  • Why this program and institution?
  • How does the program fit your background?
  • How will all study and living costs be funded?
  • What are your plans after completing the program?
Important:

A visa is not guaranteed and does not itself guarantee admission at the U.S. border. Do not make final travel arrangements until the visa is issued.
